Mark Fox, Computer Reuse Manager at Camara accepts a donation from Turlough Kinane, Financial Controller at Thermodial, at Camara Education‘s global headquarters in Chapelizod recently.
Out with the old, in with the new
As a result of the recent re-branding process, Thermodial decided to donate over seventy laptop bags embroidered with the old ‘t’ logo, which were no longer of use. These will now benefit a disadvantaged school in Africa or Jamaica.
In addition, Thermodial were at Camara to deliver some second hand ICT [information and communication technology] equipment that will be given a second life in an African or Jamaican school to enhance the educational prospects of the students.
Camara – transforming education
Camara is an international charity dedicated to using technology to improve education and livelihood skills in disadvantaged communities.
Through better, modern education, Camara empowers these communities to break the cycle of poverty they find themselves in. Camara operate in these countries, with each educational hub operating as a social enterprise.
What Camara does
Camara accept donations of second hand ICT equipment, mainly computers, from individuals and businesses. They then securely wipe the data on this equipment to US Department of Defence standards, upload the computers with educational software and ship them to one of their educational hubs. From there they are distributed to schools for a second life as an educational tool.
Thermodial and Camara – a good fit
In-keeping with Thermodial’s general reuse policy and constant focus on education and up-skilling, it was a no-brainer for Thermodial to support Camara, an organisation with both activities at its core. Thermodial Director Willie Kearney explains,
“We were delighted to pay to have our ICT equipment securely wiped, given a second life for educational purposes, and also to support Camara laptops with brand new bags. We felt it our duty as a progressive business to behave in socially responsible manner, and what better way to demonstration this than to support this wonderful social enterprise.”
